Traditional Japanese Brides

Japanese women have a reputation as beautiful, well-educated, hardworking women who make excellent wives and mothers. Japanese girls are known worldwide for being deferential to their husbands or boyfriends, because this was one of the hallmarks of a traditional Japanese wife.

These were not exactly the same duties as a beautiful geisha girl, but there were many similarities. Families, schools, businesses, and the government have work hard to reinforce the nation’s traditional family values and a Japanese girl faces enormous pressures to conform to these norms.

Maintaining traditional family roles has been easier than in many other countries, because Japan only opened direct contact with the rest of the world following United State Navy’s 1854 expedition to Japan and the final decision to embrace the Western world did not really occur until the 1870s.

Although the country is an overwhelmingly urban society that produces some of the most modern technology, it is only about 150 years removed from a deeply entrenched traditional culture that remained largely unchallenged and barely changed for at least a millennia.

The tradition that the wife was submissive to her husband was a central tenet of that culture and the tradition that a wife’s primary goal in life is to obey and pamper her husband still runs deep.
